COSMO

Postdoctoral Funding

PCI - CBPF

There are openings for 3 postdoctoral positions at COSMO (which are part of more positions in the whole of CBPF): two "senior" ones (with a monthly stipend of Brazilian R$5,200 net), for candidates who finished a Ph.D. at least 2 years ago, and a "junior" one (with a monthly stipend of R$4,160 net), for candidates who finished a Ph.D. at any stage. The starting date can be chosen among any of: July 1, August 1 and September 1, 2019, and the length of each position is 1 year, subject to renewal every year up to 5 years.

The application procedure consists of filling in the form available for download (in Portuguese) in here. The form essentially requires: an abstract ("Resumo" in Sec.2, up to 300 words), a project ("Proposta de Plano de Trabalho" in Sec.3) and a list of activities for the project ("Atividades" in Sec.4). You should email the filled-in application form to the address pci _at_ cbpf _dot_ br with a deadline of 30/4/2019. However, since the form requires, among other things, the signature of a CBPF professor who is to be the postdoc advisor, anyone interested should first get in touch with one of the COSMO professors in here, or one of the CBPF professors in here ("Pesquisa em Cosmologia, Astrofísica e Interações Fundamentais" corresponds to the COSMO department), as soon as possible. We note that, at the time of submitting the application, you should either already have, or else already have applied for (without the need of actually having it yet), the Brazilian administration number CPF. You should be able to apply for a CPF, and so obtain a proof that you have applied for it, at any Brazilian consulate/embassy. The other documents required are: a copy of your passport and a copy of your Ph.D. certificate (N.B.: no references are required).

If you have any queries or need assistance, you may contact Prof. Marc Casals at mcasals _at_ cbpf _dot_ br or else directly the PCI-purpose email pci _at_ cbpf _dot_ br. For further details, you may see (in Portuguese) here.

CNPq - PDJ and PDS

There are two CNPq funding modalities: 'Pós-Doutorado Júnior' (PDJ) and 'Pós-Doutorado Sênior' (PDS). PDJ is for candidates who finished the Ph.D. less than 7 years before the starting date of the postdoc and the duration of the postdoc is up to 12 months (extendable for another 12 months under certain conditions). PDS is for candidates who finished the Ph.D. at least 7 years before the starting date of the postdoc and the duration of the postdoc is up to 12 months, extendable for another 12 months. For both PDJ and PDS there are typically 3 calls a year, and the last deadline was March 8, 2019. Keep an eye out for any future openings. For further information (in Portuguese) you may see Secs.4 (PDJ) and 5 (PDS) in here, the financial amounts are given in here and a calendar is provided here. Please note that this funding is hard to get.

TWAS-CNPq

This program is a joint collaboration between the Brazilian agency CNPq and the The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). They offer Postdoctoral Fellowships to students/researchers currently in a developing country (other than Brazil) to do a postdoc in Brazil for a period between six and twelve months. The last deadline was September 14, 2018, with further information in here and here. The next call is still to be announced.

CNPq-CLAF

This program is a joint collaboration between the Brazilian agency CNPq and the Centro Latino-Americano de Física (CLAF). This program is open only to nationals of a Latin-American country (except Brazil) who wish to carry out postdoctoral research in Physics in a Brazilian institution. The deadline for the submission of an application for the year 2013 was the 25th of October (for a postdoc starting in March 2014), and so it is expected that the next call will have a deadline of around October 2014. For further information in Portuguese or Spanish you may see here. The chances of getting this funding are very good, so I would strongly encourage any interested Latin-American researcher to apply.

    Faperj

There are various types of postdoc funding from the agency FAPERJ, of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The duration of the funding is 1 year with potential extensions up to 5 years. There used to be two types of postdoc: a 'junior' one (PDR) and a 'senior' one (PDS). The PDR postdoc, however, is currently on hold until an agreement is reached between the funding agencies FAPERJ and Capes. The current deadline for a PDS postdoc is the 29th of October 2015 for a postdoc starting some time between February and April 2016. For further information in Portuguese you may see: Secs.IV and V of "Bolsas" in here for the various funding options depending on the seniority of the postdoc (PDR, PDR-10 and PDS), here specifically for the PDR-10 postdoc and here for a calendar of call deadlines. For further information in Portuguese you may see here.
Please note, however, that the advisor for these FAPERJ postdocs must be a researcher with a very high level of seniority (which is not my case).

    CAPES - ICRANet

This is a program of the International Center for Relativistic Astrophysics Network (ICRANet) and the topic of research should be among "theoretical and observational activities or data analysis in relativistic astrophysics and cosmology". The funding is for 2 years and the deadline for the application is September 1st of each year. For further information you may see here.

Science without Borders - Young Talent *** This programme is cancelled until further notice ***

This is a very good option for researchers currently living outside Brazil. This new program is the result of the joint effort of two different Brazilian agencies, CAPES and CNPq. The fellowship is very prestigious, the funding is rather generous and the duration of the postdoc may be between 1 and 3 years. There are 3 calls a year and the the 2014 year deadlines were 7th of April 2014, 23rd of June 2014 and 15th of September 2014 corresponding to postdocs corresponding to postdocs starting some time during June-August 2014, September-November 2014 and December 2014-February 2015, respectively. You may find the amount of financial support and other details in here.
