Lunch
Here is a list of suggestions for places for lunch (the price estimates do not include drink):
- Rio Sul shopping center has many options described here. These options are usually more comfortable but more expensive than the other ones.
- The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), which is right beside CBPF on Rua Lauro Muller, has various canteens. One of them, called "Campinho", is beside a large open space, it is self-service and paid by weight (usually it is about R$15-20), and it has particularly good barbequed meat. Another food place inside UFRJ, called "Bar do Manoel", is just over the wall shared with CBPF, it is really a very basic place but the dishes are cooked on the spot (which in some sense it's better than by weight) and they are a little cheaper - around R$13.
- The School of Nursing ("Escola de Enfermagem Alfredo Pinto"), which is the building right beside CBPF on Rua Dr. Xavier Sigaud, has a canteen with rather basic food, which is also self-service and paid per weight - a typical meal costs on the order of R$15-20.
- Across from CBPF there is the estate of Benjamin Constant (not the Institute of Benjamin Constant, which is a large, grand building further away), where there is a small place called "restaurante das Tias", which looks like someone's house and where they make tasty homemade food (but no choice of side dish: rice and beans!).
- If you are looking for the cheapest place, you may try street food: a woman with a parked car (with a sign saying "quentina caseira") across the side entrance of CBPF (i.e., on Rua Lauro Muller) sells homemade food for just R$12 (again, be prepared for...rice and beans!).
