Prof.: Raphael Dias Martins de Paola (Doutorado/Lafex)
Título: "Rotating Detectors and Mach's Principle"
Abstract: Put water inside a newton's bucket and put it to rotate; the
water will acquire a parabolic shape. This led newton to postulate the
existance of the "absolute space", with respect to which the bucket
rotates. Mach, on the other hand, states that the rotation is with
respect to all other masses in the universe. Recent results in Q.F.T.
allow for the existance of a rotating vacuum state. We investigate  the
interaction of a detector with a scalar field in two situations:
inertial detector with the field in the rotating vacuum and rotating
detector with the field in the inertial vacuum. This is  a quantized
system which raises the same questions discussed by mach in newton's
bucket experiment.
