Scientific Rationale

The Workshop will happen between 19 - 23 May 2025 at the Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas Fisicas (CBPF), Rio de Janeiro - Brazil.

The upcoming Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, set to late-2025, will deliver an unparalleled volume of time-resolved optical and near-infrared data. This transformative resource will enable us to probe the transient and variable Universe more deeply than ever before, revealing new insights into phenomena such as supernovae, kilonovae, tidal disruption events, and the variability of active galactic nuclei. The event will bring together a diverse community of observers, theorists, and instrumentation experts. Discussions will focus on integrating Rubin's data products with existing and upcoming multi-wavelength and multi-messenger observatories, as well as on overcoming the data processing and interpretation challenges posed by LSST's immense scale and rapid cadence. This event will include a two-day dedicated Transient and Variables Science Collaboration meeting.

Key topics will include:
  • Early discovery and classification of transients through Rubin's alert stream
  • Coordination with multi-wavelength and multi-messenger facilities
  • Characterizing rare and extreme events using Rubin's deep, wide survey data
  • Developing scalable data pipelines, machine learning tools, and infrastructure for real-time decision-making
  • Addressing big data challenges and promoting open science
  • Strengthening community engagement, training, and resource-sharing
  • Preparing for anomaly detection in the time domain
  • A dedicated Transient and Variables Science Collaboration meeting
