About Rio de Janeiro

The city of Rio de Janeiro is located on the Brazilian shore at 22o 57' S, 43o 10' W. The climate is tropical Atlantic with an average temperature of 24C.

Rio de Janeiro was the Brazilian capital up to April 1960. The city has the highest concentration of universities and research institutes of Brazil and it is responsible for ~20% of all scientific production of Brazil.

There are two major airports: the Antonio Carlos Jobim-Galeao International (GIG) and the Santos Dumont Airport (domestic flights).  All foreign school attendees will arrive at the Antonio Carlos Jobim-Galeao airport.

During the School, if you plan to go around by taxi in Rio (very inexpensive) always ask for a taxi from the front desk of your hotel.  There is a good subway and bus service connecting the whole Rio de Janeiro neighborhoods. Ask information from your hotel front desk or from a Brazilian colleague before going anywhere.

The metro transportation is available from the Ipanema Beach to Downtown and to the North of the city, passing through Copabana (Four stations: Cantagalo, Siqueira Campos and Arcoverde and Botaforgo (nearest to CBPF)).

If you are hosted at Copacabana neighborhood, you need nothing besides your feet to go around in Leme, Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. We recommend you to take a look at the Google earth in order to have a good view of the Rio de Janeiro area.

Rio de Janeiro is a big city (more than 6.000.000 citizens in the whole metropolitan area) and you have to behave as in other big cities around the world. When going to the beach, avoid using expensive jewelry, watches and photographic cameras. This is a general rule that applies to all people living or visiting Rio. Also, never walk through the tunnels you may find at some places (e.g. between Leme/Copacabana Beach and CBPF or Rio Sul Shopping Mall area). Always take a bus or taxi to cross the tunnel.

Places of Interest

1. Copacabana and Leme beaches
Copacabana is perhaps the most famous beach in the world. The Copacabana neighborhood is limited bye the beach and the mountains behind the buildings. If you are steering at the beach, the Leme beach is at your extreme left (at the end of Copacabana). The division between both is the Princesa Izabel Avenue. The Leme Othon Palace is located at the Leme corner of the beach. If you go to the other extreme of the Copacabana beach you will find the Copacanana Fort (a military museum). From there you can have an astonishing view of Copacabana, the Sugar Loaf and the mountains behind.

2. Ipanema and Leblon beaches
Yes, the girl from Ipanema walked there (she is still alive, actually). From the Copacabana Fort, you may enter a street named Francisco Otaviano. The street connects the Copacabana and Ipanema beach. Going down through the Francisco Otaviano Street, you get to the Ipanema beach. Look at your left and you will see the Arpoador beach (and stone) where people dive and surf.  If you go to your right you will continue at the Ipanema beach until you pass a channel of water that connects the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon (located just behind the Ipanema neighborhood). After the channel, you are at the Leblon beach. During Sundays the left lane of the avenue is closed to cars and people can walk under the sun.

In Ipanema look for the General Osório square. In Sundays you have a handcraft and arts market. You may find nice gifts there. As a convenience, there is a metro station at this same square. So, if you’re tired, get the metro to come back to your hotel area.

3. Sugar Loaf and Urca hills
CBPF is located at the Urca neighborhood, nearby the post card of Rio de Janeiro: the Sugar Loaf. If you have time, go uphill using the cable car. You will have one of the best sights seeing of Rio de Janeiro. The cable car station is at the Praia Vermelha (red beach). It is a very nice area.

4. Corcovado hill and the Christ statue
One of the best places to have a complete view of the city of Rio de Janeiro and around is the top of the Corcovado hill, where there is the statue of Jesus Christ built at the beginning of the XX century. Due to the heavy rains that have fallen over the Rio de Janeiro area in early April 2010, the access to the Corcovado hill is controlled. Ask for instructions from the front desk of your hotel if you plan to go up hill by yourself. There is a railroad connecting the Laranjeiras/Cosme Velho neighborhood to the top of Corcovado hill.
